Energy usage

Target:

To reduce our energy usage by 5% kWh per overnight guest

We understand that giving our guests the best hospitality sometimes means striking a balance between comfort and sustainability. That's why we are working very hard to minimise the impact that our business—and the events we host—have on the environment. We want to remove unnecessary carbon from our service delivery by capturing and eliminating wasted energy, reducing it wherever possible, and offsetting it where it isn't possible to remove. We are committed to finding solutions that help our clients plan better events, offering choices that don't negatively impact the environment. In doing so, we ensure that our actions are authentic and not driven by greenwashing, always seeking genuine, effective sustainability practices. We believe that true environmental responsibility goes beyond just talking about change—it’s about making a measurable impact and continuously improving.

Manifesto 7 1 Measuring

Measuring

Through the use of smart monitoring, we can accurately track and assess the energy consumption across each of our venues, broken down by area and time of day.

This valuable data enables us to set clear targets and take proactive steps to better manage our properties. It also serves as an educational tool for our teams, helping them understand and engage with our sustainability efforts. As part of Loughborough University, we take pride in our commitment to environmental responsibility, and we are annually assessed and accredited with ISO 14001, which reflects the strength of our environmental management systems. Additionally, we are proud to hold a Gold Green Tourism accreditation, recognising our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainability in every aspect of our operations.

Reduce our carbon impact

As part of our commitment to reducing our carbon output, we have developed a comprehensive Carbon Action Plan in line with the sustainability goals of our parent organisation, Loughborough University. We have taken several steps to minimise energy consumption, including reducing the temperature of our pool, programming air conditioning and heating systems to operate only when rooms are in use, and installing key card energy-saving devices in our bedrooms. Where possible, we prioritise the use of equipment powered by renewable energy sources instead of gas. In areas of the business where gas is still used for heating and cooking, we are transitioning to electric-based equipment as these systems reach the end of their lifecycle. These actions form part of our ongoing effort to reduce our environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Manifesto 7 3 Investing in green

Investing in Green

We are committed to investing in green technologies to reduce our environmental impact.

Where possible, we use equipment powered by renewable energy instead of gas, and we’re transitioning to electric-based systems for heating and cooking as older equipment reaches the end of its life. In our lighting, we’ve reduced energy consumption by 60% by switching to LED bulbs across our venues. We source our power from Loughborough University’s energy supply, supporting our sustainability commitment. Our procurement process also evaluates the lifetime energy efficiency of each item to ensure it aligns with our green goals. Additionally, the university is working on exciting projects, including a solar photovoltaic array to generate electricity from sunlight, further reinforcing our dedication to clean, renewable energy.
